Gratitude

A practice

The small specific one, not the big vague one

Generic gratitude does nothing.
One small thing, traced back, and said out loud.

01

Not the big things. The small, specific one.

Gratitude lists fail when they are generic. "My health, my family" is true and does nothing. Name one small thing from the last day or two. A particular cup of coffee. The way someone waited for you to finish a sentence.
02

Who or what made it possible?

Trace it back one step. Someone made a decision, or did something ordinary without being asked. Name them.
03

What would today have been like without it?

Not to guilt yourself into feeling grateful. Just to see the thing clearly, which is where the feeling comes from.
04

Say it to them, or write it down.

The part almost everyone skips. Gratitude kept inside stays a mood. Said out loud, it changes something between two people.

Nothing leaves this page. Nothing is saved.

Before you start

Use it when things are fine and flat, rather than when things are bad.

The mistake that kills it. Making a list. A list produces nothing measurable. One item traced back to the person who made it possible does, because it ends in a specific human being.

It worked when you want to tell them.
